Finding a wet spot where your old dog was sleeping is upsetting — for you and often for your dog. Many older dogs leak a little urine while they're deeply asleep and relaxed, without even knowing it happened. It isn't a training problem. The goal is to find out why it's happening and make cleanup so easy that it doesn't wreck your nights.

See Your Vet First

Leaking urine can have several causes, and some are very treatable:

  • Urinary tract infection
  • Weak bladder sphincter, common in older spayed female dogs, which often responds to medication
  • Drinking more than usual, which can be a sign of kidney disease, diabetes, or hormonal conditions
  • Pain or mobility problems that make it hard to get up and go out
  • Age-related cognitive changes that affect house-training

Take note of when the accidents happen, whether your dog is drinking more, and whether they seem to know it happened. Those details help your vet.

The Easy-Cleanup Bedding Setup

Think in layers, so an accident means swapping one thing, not washing everything.

Layer 1: A bed with a waterproof liner

A foam bed with a waterproof layer under a removable cover protects the foam, which is hard to clean once it's soaked. See our orthopedic bed picks — the EHEYCIGA bed includes a waterproof layer.

Layer 2: A washable pad on top

Reusable absorbent bed pads go on top of the dog bed. When there's an accident, pull the pad, put a fresh one down, and get back to sleep.

Layer 3: Spares and a plan

Keep two or three clean pads ready, plus a basket for used ones. Wash pads promptly on the setting their label recommends.

If your dog sleeps on your bed or couch

A waterproof furniture blanket protects your mattress or sofa.

Keep Your Dog Comfortable and Clean

  • Check and clean. Gently wipe your dog's back legs and belly with a damp cloth or pet wipes after an accident, then dry them. Urine left on the skin can cause irritation and sores.
  • Trim long fur around the back end if it holds moisture — or ask your groomer.
  • Go out right before bed and first thing in the morning.
  • Don't take water away to stop accidents unless your vet tells you to. Older dogs need to stay hydrated.
  • Stay calm. Many dogs are distressed by accidents. A relaxed, matter-of-fact cleanup is kinder than any fuss.

Belly bands (for male dogs) and dog diapers can help some dogs, but they need frequent changing to prevent skin irritation. Ask your vet whether they're a good fit for your dog.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my old dog peeing in his sleep?

Common reasons include a weakened bladder sphincter, urinary infections, drinking more because of conditions like kidney disease or diabetes, and age-related changes. Some causes are very treatable, so see your vet.

Is it normal for senior dogs to leak urine?

It's common, especially in older spayed female dogs, but it's not something to just accept. A vet can find out the cause, and many cases improve with treatment.

What's the best bedding for an incontinent dog?

A bed with a waterproof liner and a removable, washable cover, topped with a reusable absorbent pad you can swap quickly. Keep spare pads ready so accidents don't mean washing everything.

Should I limit my old dog's water at night?

Not without your vet's advice. Older dogs need to stay hydrated, and increased thirst can be a sign of a medical problem your vet should check.
